Develop the legal knowledge, professional judgement and practical skills needed to contribute to fair, lawful and child-centred age assessments. This advanced CPD programme is designed for experienced social care practitioners who work with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people whose age is disputed.
Across two detailed units, learners explore the legal and policy framework for age assessment before applying that knowledge to preparation, interviewing, multi-agency evidence gathering, analysis, decision-making and report writing. The course places strong emphasis on safeguarding, the benefit of the doubt, cultural competence and trauma-informed practice.
The programme combines guided e-learning, case studies, video resources, knowledge checks and reflective activities. Learning is consolidated through one final reflective work-based task, with feedback provided against the course learning outcomes.

Assessment is completed through one final reflective work-based task. Learners will use a real or realistic practice situation to reflect on how they would apply the course learning to age assessment work. The task should demonstrate understanding of the legal and policy framework, child-centred and trauma-informed practice, preparation, interviewing, evidence gathering, professional analysis, report writing and future development. The task is reviewed against the course learning outcomes. Constructive feedback and an opportunity to revise the submission will be provided where further evidence is required.
Learners who complete the online learning and satisfactorily complete the final reflective work-based task will receive a CPD certificate of completion in Age Assessment. This CPD course follows the subject content of the existing Level 4 Age Assessment programme.
